Why was Jesus crucified on a wooden cross?

When Jesus was sentenced to death, Jesus was crucified on a wooden cross. But why? Why wasn’t Jesus stoned to death? Why was Jesus crucified on a wooden cross?

What happened when someone committed a sin worthy of death in the Old Covenant?

And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance (Deuteronomy 21:22-23)

When a member of the congregation became disobedient to God and sinned in the Old Covenant, he not only laid the sin upon himself, but he laid the sin upon the whole congregation.

valley of Achor

The whole congregation became accursed, as soon as a person became disobedient to the words of God and kept living in sin; in disobedience to God.

The whole congregation became a partaker of his sin and that’s why the curse came over the congregation and became separated from God (ອ່ານນຳ: What is the meaning of the valley of Achor? and What does the Word say about sin in the church?).

When a person committed a sin worthy of death, which is a sin unto death, then this person had to be put to death.

The person was put to death and because the person was accursed of God, some were hanged on a tree, so that the person’s shame was exposed.

Why was the person hanged on a tree? Because the disobedience to God started with a tree.

In order to prevent, that the land was being defiled, the person was removed from the tree and buried the same day, before the night. As soon as the person died and was buried, the curse, which rested on the congregation, through the disobedience of the person, was broken.

Why was Jesus crucified on a wooden cross?

Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous (Romans 5:18-19)

Since this punishment for the sin unto death, was part of the Old Covenant, Jesus was also hanged on a tree, according to the law of the Old Covenant. Jesus was hanged (crucified) on a tree (cross), and He took the punishment, which was meant for sinners, upon Himself (Acts 5:30; 10:39; 13:29).

Jesus was made sin

Despite the many temptations in the flesh, Jesus stayed obedient to God even unto death and carried the punishment (death penalty) for the disobedience of fallen man (sinners), and became the Substitute for fallen man.

Jesus carried all the sins and iniquities of the world, which lead to death. He took the blame and the punishment (death penalty).

Jesus was despised and mocked. He was made sin and a curse and broke the curse, which was upon the generation of fallen man due to the disobedience of man, for those, who by faith in Him would be born again in Him (Galatians 3:13).

The disobedience of man to God started at a tree and ended at a tree through the obedience of a Man.

As a spotless Lamb, Jesus was sacrificed. So that, everyone, who would believe in Jesus Christ, ພຣະບຸດຂອງພຣະເຈົ້າ, and make Him Saviour and Lord and obey Him, would not have to carry the punishment for sin, which is the death penalty, and therefore would not see the death, but would inherit eternal life (Hebrews 5:9).

That is to say, if a person is willing to give up his own life and die to the flesh and follow Jesus (the Word). Because, that’s the condition to become a son or daughter of the living God and to be a partaker of the Tree of life and inherit eternal life.
