Did you know that the last miracle of Elisha didn’t take place during his life? But that the last miracle of Elisha took place when Elisha was dead? This last miracle of Elisha proved that Elisha had indeed received a double portion of the spirit of Elijah. What was the last miracle of Elisha?
The miracles of Elijah and the miracles of Elisha
Before Elijah ascended to heaven, Elijah asked Elisha, what he could do for him. Elisha answered Elijah and said: “I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me”
Elijah told Elisha, that if he would see Elijah being taken from him, Elisha would receive a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. But if Elisha would not see Elijah taken from him, Elisha wouldn’t receive a double portion of Elijah’s spirit.
Elijah gave Elisha this answer probably, because Elijah thought that it was a hard thing he had asked for. But nothing is too hard for our God!
And as Elijah and Elisha walked and talked, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire and parted them and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
Elisha witnessed Elijah’s ascension. Therefore Elisha would get, what he asked for; a double portion of Elijah’s spirit.
But how did Elisha know, that he had received a double portion of Elijah’s spirit? Elisha also could have asked for Elijah’s spirit instead of a double portion of Elijah’s spirit. But how was it shown, that Elisha had received a double portion of Elijah’s spirit? It was shown by the fact, that Elisha performed twice as many miracles as Elijah.
The last miracle of Elisha
When Elisha was dying, Elisha had still one miracle left to perform. Maybe Elisha thought about it or maybe Elisha didn’t. Anyway, when Elisha died, God didn’t forget His promise to Elisha. God was faithful to His promise.
And so it happened that during Elisha’s funeral, while they were burying Elisha, the last miracle of Elisha took place:
Elisha died, and they buried him. And the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year. And it came to pass, as they were burying a man, that, behold, they spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha:and when the man was let down, and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet (2 Kings 13:20-21)
The last miracle of Elisha confirmed that Elisha had received exactly, what Elisha had asked for, namely a double portion of the spirit of Elijah. Because Elisha performed twice as many miracles as Elijah.
