What is the meaning of Proverbs 3:5, Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding? What does it mean in your daily life? How can you trust in the Lord with all your heart?
The world wants you to trust in yourself and lean on your own understanding
Although Proverbs 3:5 teaches us to trust in the Lord with all your heart and to not lean on your own understanding, the world teaches us the exact opposite, to trust in yourself and to lean on your own understanding.
The world promotes and instructs everyone to be well educated and to gain a lot of (carnal) knowledge and wisdom, so that every person becomes wise and rely on his own human ability.
The world wants you to become wise and rely on your own knowledge, wisdom and understanding, so that you become independent of everyone, including God. Well, that’s not really true.
Although the world instructs you to educate yourself and to trust in your own knowledge, wisdom and ability, in reality the world makes you depended upon the world its system. Yes, the world wants you to rely on the things of the world instead of God.
The way of the world is not the way of the Lord
However the way of the world is not the way of the Lord. The Lord wants something else. The Lord wants you to trust Him. He wants to have a relationship with you and wants to take care of you, provide for you, and to protect you. There’s only one requirement for you, and that’s to fully trust Him.
You cannot trust a person, if you don’t know the person. Therefore, if you want to trust the Lord, then you have to get to know Him. There is only one way to get to know Him, and that’s through His Word. Jesus is the way, and He is the Living Word that became flesh.
When you read, study, and meditate on His Word, then you shall get to know Him. When you get to know Him, you shall be able to trust Him. When you trust Him, you shall apply His words in your life and walk according to His Word in faith.
The Lord says to trust Him, with all your heart. That doesn’t mean 95%, or 99%, but it means 100%.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding (Proverbs 3:5)
It’s not about what you think, what you’ve learned, what kind of degrees you have or your titles, because this is all foolishness to God. Yes, the knowledge and wisdom of this world are foolishness with God.
The wisdom of the world and the wisdom of God don’t go together. It’s either the one or the other. You have a choice to follow the way of the world or to follow the way of the Word.
That’s why God says: “trust Me completely. Don’t rely on your earthly wisdom, what your senses tell you, but trust Me.”
The Lord sees everything and knows everything situation you’re going through. He is with you always, and He only wants the best for your life.
He wants to give you His best advise through His Word, because He loves you. The Word is written out of love for you, to guide you in your life.
There is nothing more that the Father can do, in order to show you how much He loves you. He loves you, and He has shown that to you, by giving His Word. He gave His only Son for you, so that you may live in freedom instead of living in the bondage of sin. Through Jesus Christ, you will be reconciled to the Father and receive eternal life.
It is all up to you. Will you follow the world and do your will in your life? Will you lean on your own understanding? Or will you trust in the Lord, with all your heart, be obedient to Him, and walk in His commandments and fulfil His will in your life?
