We live in a microwave society. People are always in a hurry, living a rushed life, and can hardly wait anymore. They want to get things done as quickly as possible, instead of waiting and being patient, because ‘time is money’. Due to this behavior, many mistakes or wrong decisions are made that can affect the rest of people’s lives. This also happens with Christians. Many mistakes and wrong decisions could have been prevented if only Christians would wait on the Lord.

What is opposed to wait? A man rests and does his duty

Living a rushed life and responding quickly and acting speedily is not always a good thing. Sometimes it’s better to take some time and think about something before responding or acting.

As a believer of Jesus Christ, you should be patient and be able to wait on the Lord. Because if you want to get things done immediately and don’t have the ability to wait and be patient, you can hamper God, and cause a big mess.

In the Bible, there are many examples that refer to this behavior. We have many examples of what will happen when people can’t wait on the Lord and can’t wait for God’s promise. Because they were not able to wait on the Lord, they made the promise come to pass through their own actions (Funda futhi: Waiting for God’s promise).

They were impatient and wanted to help God and give Him a helping hand so that His promise would come to pass.

But God doesn’t need any help in making His promise come to pass. He only wants His people to trust Him and rely upon Him. He wants His people to be patient and wait on Him.

David trusted the Lord

Linda eNkosini: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, ngithi, on the Lord (Amahubo 27:14)

David wrote about his life, his experiences, and his relationship with the Lord. He wrote about his situations, and the place, that the Lord had in his life. Without the Lord, David would be lost. Although David made mistakes, David learned through all his experiences, to wait on the Lord and to trust in the Lord completely.

In the first part of this verse, David wrote a commandment: wait on the Lord. God’s time is not our time. But His time should become our time. When we walk after the Spirit, then His time will become our time and we will be able to wait.

If the Lord shows us something, it doesn’t mean that it will happen immediately, but in due time, it will come to pass. Many times the Lord will show us something, that will happen in the future. The only thing you have to do is to believe Him, rely on Him, and expect it to happen.

Be of good courage

David continued with the words, to be of good courage. If you are able to wait on the Lord, you are strong and of good courage.

The words ‘be of good courage’ have been translated from the word ‘châzaq’ and mean:

to fasten upon; hence to seize, be strong (figuratively courageous, causatively strengthen, cure, help, repair, fortify), obstinate; to bind, restrain, conquer: – aid, amend, X calker, catch, cleave, confirm, be constant, constrain, continue, be of good (take) courage (-ous, -ly), encourage (self), be established, fasten, force, fortify, make hard, harden, help, (lay) hold (fast), lean, maintain, play the man, mend, become (wax) mighty, prevail, be recovered, repair, retain, seize, kube (wax) sore, strengthen (self), be stout, kube (make, shew, wax) strong (-er), be sure, take (hold), be urgent, behave self valiantly, withstand (Strong’s Concordance no. H2388)

When you wait on the Lord, you show that you are strong and courageous and that you are able to withstand any temptation and won’t take action by yourself.

While you wait on the Lord, don’t become passive and lazy. Don’t let yourself be entertained by the world. Don’t feed yourself with the things of the world, because that will cause spiritual poverty and you don’t want that. You want to become spiritually strong.

Therefore you need to stay active in the Spirit, by spending time with the Lord. Study and meditate on the Word of God (day and night), get to know Him and His will, pray, fast, and build yourself up by speaking in tongues.

Prepare yourself for that moment, when the promise of the Lord will come to pass in your life.

The Lord shall strengthen your heart

When you wait on the Lord and be of good courage, then the Lord will strengthen your heart. Your heart, which is the center of your being, shall be strong, fearless, steadfast, and unshakable.

Therefore be patient and of good courage in your daily walk with the Lord. Keep His commandments and keep the faith in Jesus Christ. Let Him be the Master over every situation of your life. When you trust and rely on Him, then His promises will come to pass in your life.
